Project on Albania.

Here is the project for you to read. There are approximately 400 words. The photos can't be included, but we can see them in class on Friday.




THE REPUBLIC OF ALBANIA

Albania is a small country in southeastern Europe. It borders Montenegro, Kosovo, Macedonia and Greece, and has got a coast on the Adriatic Sea. Italy is opposite Albania's coast. It isn't a member of the European Union yet, but it is a member of the United Nations.


The population of Albania is approximately 3 million, and its capital is Tirana. The country's total area is about 29 000 km². The official language is Albanian and the people are called Albanians. In their language, the country is called Republika e Shqipërisë, and its motto is "You, Albania give me honour, you give me the name Albanian". The currency of Albania is the Lek.


Geography, fauna and flora

In the coastal areas there is a Mediterranean climate, with mild, wet winters and hot, dry, sunny summers. In the inland areas there are mountains and lakes. In Albania there are a lot of forests, where a great variety of fauna and flora live: there are 3250 species of plants and there are wolves, bears, wild boars, chamois, the Balkan lynxes, wildcats, martens, and polecats. On the coast you can see seals, pelicans and cormorants. In the countryside there are vultures and the golden eagle, the national symbol.


Politics and government

The head of state of Albania is President Bamir Topi, who lives in the Presidential Palace of Tirana. The head of government is Prime Minister Sali Berisha. The Parliament of Albania has got 140 members.


Religion

The majority of Albanians are Muslim and there are also Christians. The most famous person from Albania is Mother Teresa of Calcutta, a Roman Catholic nun who worked in India.


Culture

Albanian, Greek and Turkish music, songs and dance have got similar influence and
characteristics, and literature is very important in Albania. A famous writer is Ismail Kadare.


Tourism

In Albania there are lots of important and interesting Greek, Roman and Ottoman ruins to visit. There are also beautiful beaches, mountains and villages that tourists like very much.


Food and drink

Food and drink in Albania are Mediterranean. Albanians like fish, lamb, bread, olive oil, vegetables and fruit. Specialities are dolma (stuffed vine leaves), tarator (cold yoghurt and cucumber soup) and baklava (honey and walnut pastry).


Sport

Albanians like playing and watching football and basketball, as well as rugby and volleyball. The Albanian Football Association is a member of UEFA and its nickname is “The Red and Blacks”.
